The One-Minute of Happiness Challenge

On a spontaneous trip to Barnes & Noble, I started searching for some kind of workbook or journal to help me focus on myself a little more. I came across this journal called “The One-Minute Happiness Journal” by Eva Olsen. “365 ways to capture the joy in your life every day” it said. Being a stay-at-home mom trying to run my small business, I very often feel stressed and overwhelmed. I find myself struggling to be happy. I love to journal and this particular one was very appealing to me. The layout is fun and inviting and the prompts are totally random and amazing at the same time. The point of the journal is to find joy and happiness in the little things around you every

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness - it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention.” - Brene Brown

This quote is on the very first page of the book and it hit me hard. How often do we try and find or create the most extraordinary moments in life in order to be happy? Have you ever just looked around and found joy in something small and seemingly insignificant? Happiness is there if we just take a step back and really look. The very first prompt in this book says, ” Write down a song lyric that is guaranteed to make you smile whenever you hear it. BONUS: Make that song a ringtone.”

If you’re like me and you listen to music all of the time, this sounds like the easiest question ever, right? It’s actually a little harder than I anticipated. When I listen to music I’m also doing a million other things and I’m not really listening or focusing on the lyrics. I know which songs make me smile or dance, but what are the songs really saying? To answer this question I had to lookup the lyrics to a couple of my favorite songs and really focus on why they make me happy. A song. One song that I’ve listening to 1,000 times. THAT is something I can find happiness in.

All of the prompts are like this. Simple things that we just go through life without really focusing on, but that totally make us happy when we think about it.

I just want to challenge you to try and slow down a little this year. Even if all the time you can get is ONE MINUTE, take it. Breathe in the world around you. Focus on something small. Find your happiness.
